Needing a newly refreshed headshot was top of mind when I was first approached about this headshot session in my studio in Whitby. Kiron came to me he was job hunting and needed a refresh not only for the search but for his Linked In Profile and all social media image touch points.
Headshot sessions start with the key question we ask on all our business cards:
What story do you want to tell?
We spent some time reviewing how the images would be used – mainly for social media touch points such as Linked In. Picked a solid blue backdrop so his portraits are modern and kept away from mottled backgrounds which shout Sears Portrait studio from the turn of the century and my own childhood portraits.
Kiron is tall, over 6 feet, so posing is key to showcase his height. We even pushed the rules aside to allow him to mix patterns with a favourite shirt and his checked suit. No need for a tie for that one – I like that it shows his personality in balance with more corporate styling in the other two images.
Our studio carries some dress shirts in sizes M to 3XL but we always suggest bringing in a few options for suits, sports jackets and casual wear when attending a headshot session. As Kiron shows one suit can do it all but we are happy to help you figure out which choices will highlight you best from a wider range of wardrobe selections. There is no right way but your session fee includes our consultation so feel free to send us options.
Are you looking to refresh your headshot in 2024? The investment is essential in this post pandemic world as we continue to Zoom, frequent social media and connect often in digital form before we get to meet in person.

Last summer we created some new content for local Brooklin chiropractor Dr. du Quensay. Her clinic is located at 134 Baldwin St. N. with ample parking in site for patients.
Our initial consultation we discussed what her business content would be used for. In her case a website was being recreated and she had very specific visions for how and what content she wanted to see in the new site.
We knew we wanted to feature the clinic from the street so patients who are new to the practice could find the building from the road. In addition, to show the gardens near the parking area which ties into the overall brand.
Not to be left out Dr. du Quensay’s story are her two dogs who she and her husband walk throughout the downtown every day. We found some time during the session to walk downtown and capture them on a local bench.

A business brand is one of your most valuable tools. It is also okay to not have been born with the ability to write copy, take photos and film video. The most professional approach is to bring in the professionals who can help you build a brand that tells your story.
That is just what this amazing business owner did when she hired us. She worked with a business coach to redesign her business, website and after researching she decided to connect with us to do her photos.
Clients spend time telling us what they need so we can provide the package that fits their needs and budget. We do a walk through to determine the best way to capture the images that line up with their brand.
Images can be functional – like showing the room you work in or the front of the building (if applicable). Melissa has a warm and welcoming massage room with black out curtains, a soft teal paint on the wall and a warm wood floor. A photo conveys this quickly so your client knows how it will feel in the space, exception the lights would be dimmed here.
Images can show you at work, we captured many images of Melissa doing her craft (fully lit for storytelling purposes). Her services range from massage services, mobile massages, Craniosacral therapy, Integrative manual therapy and infant massage.
We also picked a few of the tools she uses and sells to allow her to showcase them in social media posts that will drive back to her website. The images are in the same shoot and feel connected to the overall branding.

Above a simple black jacket paired with a scoop tank top and a meaningful jewelry piece creates a modern look for her.
The world during the pandemic has changed the landscape of how we work and as a result having a headshot that represents you is essential. First impressions are still the most important thing when meeting new colleagues and clients – so by using a professional headshot artist you are literally putting your best “face” forward.
Our brains can absorb a lot from a photo – is this person trust worthy? is this person someone I would like? like to work with? is this someone who is good at their job. Professional imagery done well creates a strong first impression versus a cellphone shot or worse, a cropped shot from the last wedding you attended.
In Susan’s office there is no office. They work virtually and have as a new team formed during the pandemic. While face to face is not out of the question the norm for her is Zoom and other online meeting zones. So with this in mind we started looking at how to create her headshots to reflect who she is. In her world chances are 100% of the people spend time with her photo – not her in person.
When dressing for headshots much like any portrait we ask bring solid shirts and jacket that will allow the focus to stay on your face in your headshot. We levelled up this studio jacket Susan borrowed by changing it from an olive green to a purple that suited her hair and her personality. As a purple lover myself I was all in on that change. It also provided a more modern colour story with the navy background.
Susan is a modern, fun and educated woman. We wanted her portraits to show this immediately and reinforce her position as a Chief Pension Officer. These options give her room to change it up from time to time – the main reason we offer a 3 image package is the flexibility it gives clients.
This use of a paper lined surface to create a faux desk is one of my new favourite ways to stage a headshot. It creates a lovely modern “desk” and allows for the client to sit forward, elongating the body through the neck and shoulders for that perfect pose an modern headshot.
If you need to update your professional headshots we would love to chat. In a world that seems to still be embracing Zoom it’s not a nice to have, it’s a must have.

This fall we worked with the team at Invest Durham to capture team images that captured their team. This team is growing in size and in turn growing they are growing opportunities in the Durham Region. “The priority of the Economic Development and Tourism Division of the Region of Durham (Invest Durham) is to lead, facilitate and support various investment attraction and expansion initiatives. Our goal is to create and retain jobs, increase non-residential assessment and promote the region as the best place to live, work and invest.”
The brief was to create professional images that were consistent, natural (no makeup artists) and utilized the onsite location to the fullest. The location had an older property barn that was painted this soft blue and it tied nicely into the overall branding which is navy and deep orange. We shot the team using open shade and natural light to create a soft, approachable feeling for the images and the barn boards tie in the solo and overall team shot.
These team shots were captured on a gorgeous property in open shade. The blue barn boards give a uniform backdrop for this dynamic team and the sunny day provided ample lighting.
In order to ensure a smooth experience I walked the site during the same time of day. We chose some options for the images and then had the client decide on which one worked best. Then we set up two options for the use of that spot and they chose this one which softened the wood behind the subject.
The team shot and 14 staff took the morning to capture. We had each team member approve their image on site so that we could speed up the editing process on our end. Everything was wrapped by noon and the team could spend some time face to face outside.
