Graduation from Grade Eight was my first big moment in life. I remember the lemon yellow dress I wore (the only other time I have done that since was a wedding). I remember feeling very grown up and fancy and maybe not liking my white shoes (but my memory is fuzzy). I got a bible from my parents for all those kids who are asking for MacBooks – yes this is a thing (yikes).
So as we work with all the grade eight graduates this spring I am reminded of how much they are missing. They are missing sitting in a fancy outfit in the school gym, our school gym is super small and hot. They are missing out on gathering with friends after for a graduation dinner at the Brock House (this is a tradition at this grads school) and they are getting a prerecorded grad ceremony up for 24 hours that is over Zoom so we can dial in our loved ones from their houses.
Young men like this graduate have been faithfully doing online classes and waiting for a time when we will all gather again. This particular young man is a talented soccer player, has been in many school plays and on all the sports teams. E. A. Fairman P.S. is a small school (growing much larger next spring) and the benefit is no matter what your skills you make every team – but this guy is a born athlete. He is kind, gentle and getting taller by the day. Another friend of my sons that is taller than me seems par for the course these days.
When you work with kids you have know since they were in Senior Kindergarten there is a special connection you don’t get otherwise. This young man has seen me at every school sport I can attend from track and field to lacrosse. He has worked with me when we captured 80+ portraits for the school play in the black and white style so used by real theatres. He has seen me at every school event and play capturing the experience of the school’s community. He knows my kids and he knows me. That connection is invaluable.
As a small studio we thank you so much for supporting us as the third wave of the pandemic draws to a close. We are permitted as of the date of this publishing to work retail photography (business to consumer – family, grads etc) outside as long as we follow social distancing guidelines and gathering limits outlined by the Ontario government for the Step we are in which is Step 1. That means until we open further studio sessions are not permitted but we have lots of great locations locally and outside that fit the bill.

In the wake of last years pandemic – which was fresh and new a year ago – graduates were the first clients we worked with when we opened in June 2020. This grade eight session was done in a now empty space – free of commuters and vehicles as the pandemic asked us to work at home to stay safe.
Garages have levels denoted by colour so when I started last year my two black gowns and one blue stole worked well with the upper level of the rooftop level. It also matched his tie so the tone on tone gives a nice effect.
The garage markings can add interest to the composition and level up the already amazing indirect light. Sometimes a spot you have used a few times becomes something new when you revisit it with a new client. The new trend is a suit or dress shirt with smart sneakers (not your ratty ones, these ones are the dressy kind). Well styled hair and of course bring your diploma, any awards if they have been handed out and we document it all. I am not showing those shots but his watch is a lovely touch to complete the look.
When dressing for graduate photos be sure to dress up so the gown and the outfit you would have worn to graduation is celebrated. This young man again had this great tone on tone blue outfit which worked so well with the blue tone on the rooftop.

This October we are going to be at Blackstock Christmas Tree Farm for our annual “The Christmas Tree Farm Experience” for family photos for this Christmas season coming up. We love this farm – owned by a young family who graciously is renting us the farm for a day October 24, 2020 in the afternoon (plus the back up date the Sunday Oct 25, 2020).
Our sessions will be socially distanced – all outside and shot with a zoom lens. Both Kirsten and Kennedy will be there to assist wearing masks. Orders will be placed online during a 5 day window for any additional products you might need for the holidays.
What is also different is how we are managing the props. This year it is all on you to bring blankets and that one single, family Christmas item. Our son is shown above with a star that always hangs on the back of our front door. Choose something timeless like a star, a snowflake, a lantern or maybe a copy of the Night Before Christmas. This keeps everyone safe with no reuse of props and an outdoor setting for fresh air. It also ties the session into your family traditions, making it a classic story of YOU.
Also very important is to note we are only taking a $50 deposit now and the remainder two weeks ahead of the date. This non refundable deposit can be moved to another session should we have stage changes due to the pandemic or worse a lockdown. This year we have tried to think of everything so you have a little less to worry about and more to look forward to.
Please see the link below to book your session and thanks for choosing us to Capture the Experience with this year.

The pandemic opening meant we got back to work with June and July limited edition “The Front Porch Experiences”. Join us in this blog as we showcase a lovely weekend home for this blended family in Peterborough.
Capturing a family at home means letting the evening unwind without too much planning. This family loves to go for walks and bike rides. We show this in the session which took about an hour to capture for the family. Everyone is involved from the dogs to the kids who we let be themselves from happiness to worry, after all learning to ride a bike is a right of passage but it can be a little scary.
We also found a door that leads to fairies and discovered a friendly neighbourhood cat. These are not things you can plan for but are happy discoveries along the way. We wanted to do ice cream but the line up with COVID-19 meant we abandoned that plan. Going with the flow means a true capture of the experience of this family.
I rarely leave the house without bubbles and using them in a session to reenergize kids is a way to make a photography experience more fun. Posing is needed for some of the images but these are the ones that stick with me.
Each session was taken outside, socially distanced and captured with zoom lenses to keep us 6 feet or 2 metres apart during the process. Walking with them, in front and behind, letting them pile up on one another and encouraging hugs with eachother because as we all know hugs are in short supply these days. Only members in the bubble are in attendance and we also made sure to stay distanced from neighbours as we walked.
We love working with families and we are now booking limited edition Fall Family experiences for August to October 2020.

This blog post will bring you up to speed on how to easily order items for your Graduate after the experience is complete. We miss seeing you in the studio but for now this is the second best thing.
FYI: do not try to order on your phone and tablet, we always recommend ordering on a desktop as the best way forward. If this is not possible a tablet over a phone is always preferred.
Step 1 – In your email click the link to generate the gallery screen which will look something like this (below). You can also access this through your client portal.
Step 2 – On individual images you will have access to PRINTS, DIGITALS and CREDITS (the latter depending on your package as not all packages include prints).
Step 3 – For additional items not showing click the upper right hand corner button named ORDER ITEMS and click the item you wish to order. For this sample in the blog we are going to show a 12×12 plaque collage item. NOTE: prices are subject to change without notice and over time.

The teenager. We mark this time from age 13 to 19. They grow at an unprecedented rate, gain new found independence and often spend a lot of time on their own. After all figuring out all this change takes time, an abundant amount of sleep (the pandemic has been ideal for daily sleep ins).
Gone are the days of mini sessions, props and themed sessions. Teenagers don’t want to have anything to do with that. They have Instagram profiles, social circles and personal tastes that must be part of planning when working with this age group.
During the pandemic our oldest, our model for this session, turned 15. It was a quiet affair with no birthday parades, some embarrassing signs and a t-shirt from his mom to mark the occasion.
He is a quiet kid, with a strength of character and a simple aesthetic – plain grey t-shirts, jeans and runners are his thing. Any location needed to be simple, modern and urban to match his love of architecture, modern design (Le Corbusier and other modernists).
Sitting empty through the pandemic parking garages are a great spot to find some fresh, modern landscapes. I have been exploring these spots and loving the end result. We spend less than half an hour and walk out with amazing shots in a variety of spots with ever changing light during the golden hour.
Instead of cap and gown consider a Senior Experience to capture those amazing years of teenagehood. They are never the same after those 7 years and it is a great way to continue milestone sessions. It is also a great way to do an alternative graduation session – featuring the suit or the dress or whatever the graduate prefers to wear.
Each session is outside, socially distanced and captured with zoom lenses to keep us 6 feet or 2 metres apart during the process. We have a few different locations to allow your teenager the look and feel that best expresses who they are.
