This Canadian kid turns double digits this summer, is there anything else cooler for a kid? Making sure you cover those milestones with a photography session.
Every birthday I work with my boys to create one milestone session with them. It’s not each child’s favourite evening with the exception of this guy who still plans the whole thing with me from props, to crazy things we can try and puts up with my expiramentation.
Kids often will tell you they do not like photos. They have memories of being in front of cameras in the gym at school in the view of their peers and not in a setting that would inspire any young mind. Kids who work with me get to help create the end result.
We discuss where we are taking the session, what props they are feeling work for them and we move away from things that do not. There is an element of what is planned but there is the room to be free in choosing what works for the kid in front of the lens.
This ten year old loves LEGO, building with polymer clay and making models out of cardboard. There are glue guns, exacto knives and paint all over the house in the wake of his creative spirit. He dreams in Minecraft and loves watching Star Wars cartoons and anything with a superhero.
Our third son at double digits – forgive me if I am a little teary as I write this post. He’s no baby anymore.
With a new watch today our little energy bunny walked the house until he hit his 60 minute milestone. He is planning bike rides, walking and swimming all week, thanks Garmin for the extra motivation.
Is there anything more Canadian than that outfit and that smile? Adding in the flag a as a superhero cape worked well so inspire him to run around and enjoy the empty parking lot which has a been an unexpected space to work in the pandemic.
We work throughout the Durham Region (based in Olde Whitby) and the Greater Toronto Area, we even will travel to cottage country. Sessions are best made in spaces that have meaning and value to you. Your hometown, your cottage or the local beach. Include the dog and the kids and YOURSELF. Being in photos now means you get to see how awesome you looked years later and you leave images of you for your kids who trust me, think you are beautiful just as a you are.

This October we are going to be at Blackstock Christmas Tree Farm for our annual “The Christmas Tree Farm Experience” for family photos for this Christmas season coming up. We love this farm – owned by a young family who graciously is renting us the farm for a day October 24, 2020 in the afternoon (plus the back up date the Sunday Oct 25, 2020).
Our sessions will be socially distanced – all outside and shot with a zoom lens. Both Kirsten and Kennedy will be there to assist wearing masks. Orders will be placed online during a 5 day window for any additional products you might need for the holidays.
What is also different is how we are managing the props. This year it is all on you to bring blankets and that one single, family Christmas item. Our son is shown above with a star that always hangs on the back of our front door. Choose something timeless like a star, a snowflake, a lantern or maybe a copy of the Night Before Christmas. This keeps everyone safe with no reuse of props and an outdoor setting for fresh air. It also ties the session into your family traditions, making it a classic story of YOU.
Also very important is to note we are only taking a $50 deposit now and the remainder two weeks ahead of the date. This non refundable deposit can be moved to another session should we have stage changes due to the pandemic or worse a lockdown. This year we have tried to think of everything so you have a little less to worry about and more to look forward to.

It has been the story all over Whitby and the Durham Region – if you graduated this year things were decidely not the same. This client came to me after driving two hours to capture graduate photos they said fell flat. After seeing a similar session for a classmate they came to us for a redo.
By only doing one session a day and owning two hats we could add the hat the other supplier missed. We corrected details like messy hair and edited out a collar that slipped out because those are standard edits for us. Mom stepped in to assist so the contact with this young graduate was with someone in his family bubble. We stayed 6 feet apart using a longer lens and wearing a mask (yes even outside).
Grade eight graduation is normally full of very sweet moments – hot gyms filled with laughter and too many chairs, academic awards and thoughful speeches and of course the big dinner after its all done. But COVID-19 took that away from the kids and with numbers still very high there was no chance to even try hosting this during lockdown.
Our graduation sessions were designed to be fun, modern and make these graduates the centre of attention for the evening. This young man rocked his session.
I was told by the clients they were so delighted by the session they had a hard time deciding on which images to choose. It is always so lovely to deliver, especially after a client has had a less than satisfactory experience with photography before hiring you.
Our sessions come with a gallery to choose your favourite poses and order print sheets for them (one package even has two sheets included).

The pandemic opening meant we got back to work with June and July limited edition “The Front Porch Experiences”. Join us in this blog as we showcase a lovely weekend home for this blended family in Peterborough.
Capturing a family at home means letting the evening unwind without too much planning. This family loves to go for walks and bike rides. We show this in the session which took about an hour to capture for the family. Everyone is involved from the dogs to the kids who we let be themselves from happiness to worry, after all learning to ride a bike is a right of passage but it can be a little scary.
We also found a door that leads to fairies and discovered a friendly neighbourhood cat. These are not things you can plan for but are happy discoveries along the way. We wanted to do ice cream but the line up with COVID-19 meant we abandoned that plan. Going with the flow means a true capture of the experience of this family.
I rarely leave the house without bubbles and using them in a session to reenergize kids is a way to make a photography experience more fun. Posing is needed for some of the images but these are the ones that stick with me.
Each session was taken outside, socially distanced and captured with zoom lenses to keep us 6 feet or 2 metres apart during the process. Walking with them, in front and behind, letting them pile up on one another and encouraging hugs with eachother because as we all know hugs are in short supply these days. Only members in the bubble are in attendance and we also made sure to stay distanced from neighbours as we walked.
We love working with families and we are now booking limited edition Fall Family experiences for August to October 2020.
