Branding for Nourished a Way of Life (Durham)

Branding for Nourished a Way of Life (Durham)

A brand is something essential when starting your business.  Many people ignore it or try do it yourself options that can hurt your brand or worse kill its success before it even has a chance to get started. So when a client comes to you while building her brand it’s the perfect time to include  photographer who can adapt to the style of your brand.

Avoid using a photographer whose work all looks the same – your photography should reflect your brand not theirs. How can you tell they can handle this? Their work should show a variation of skills that allow them to understand not only natural light, off camera flash and studio light but also colour theory and how that impact the overall brand.

With over eight years experience in the Durham Region we have built relationships with locations that in a pinch will let us work on site. Those kind of partnerships are invaluable when making content for clients locally. Here we are working at Hy Hope Farm as they graciously let us use the gardens to showcase the nutritional aspects of the brand for this client.

Timing is everything with outdoor and food branding. We were lucky in late July to find some suitable produce to use for this shoot which was done with masks, social distancing and some creative positioning to make the most of the environment, the brand and keep everyone SAFE.

Showing things growing is so perfect for this brand. We grabbed the can, threw in some water and did a little watering for the garden while working. We had such a good time because when you have the right setting, an engaged client and a good idea of the end result it is magical.

As I walked the site before the client arrived I was looking for NEW in a site I have been lucky to work on several times over the past eight years. I walked past the garlic barn and went inside. It felt like I had walked into Rome, Italy where we spent our honeymoon. It was glorious and I showed it to her and how I could use it to frame the lower part of the photo. How many images of a garlic barn have you seen locally? Exactly.

No lie we were giddy in this garlic drying barn, the smell was better than chocolate and that is saying something from this certified chocoholic. Imagine the recipes these garlic bunches will make all over Durham and the health benefits that will bring. Heaven on earth.

Let us help you brand sparkle like Amanda’s and Nourished a Way a Life by connecting with us for a branding experience that will lay the foundation for your business. We capture sharp, skilled and brand appropriate images for your personal and business needs all fully insured in Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

Fast, Modern Team Headshots

Fast, Modern Team Headshots

We have been working for the last year with 1855 Whitby to ensure they have consistent member headshots for use on their website. This value add for members gives them a professional look in keeping with the other members at 1855 – Durham Region’s first and only technology accelerator.

Just some of the great features of our team headshot experience include:

  • Quick modern set ups.
  • Full PDF of what to wear and what NOT to wear for your employees.
  • Versatility to work in both natural light and studio/Off Camera Flash scenarios on site at your business.
  • On site viewing of images being taken so team member is involved in the making of their portrait and pose.
  • On site choice of image for each team member increases efficiency.
  • Consistent look across team members.
  • When needed on site assitant to ensure a smooth process.
  • Back up gear brought to every single session.
  • Fully insured.

The process is pretty straight forward – here is what we need to quote on your team:

  • The number of solo and group shots required.
  • The location of your business.
  • The style of image you wish to create – studio or on location/lifestyle
  • Timeline for taking and delivering images.

The Visual Story of JoAnne Drumm – Local Councillor

The Visual Story of JoAnne Drumm – Local Councillor

JoAnne Drumm Alexander is the daughter of Joe Drumm, who served on Whitby Council for an impressive 41 years serving as East Ward Councillor and then as a Regional Councillor. JoAnne is the current Centre Ward councillor serving her first term after a long career working in Library Services and also as an Early Childhood Educator.

JoAnne is the Mayor’s designate on the board of the Whitby Yatch Club, who graciously let us create images for JoAnne on site at the club. We used water as a the background for this portrait of JoAnne Drumm Alexander on a warm summer’s evening.

(above) Also shot at the Whitby Yatch Club we used the stairs to the upper deck adjacent the large room often used for parties and weddings. The mixture of glass, metal and wood textures creates a unique background for her professional image.

We have such a beautiful waterfront, it was something that drew me to the town when we ourselves moved her 8+ year ago. JoAnne and I walked the whole facility looking to the harbour, along the boats and closer to the clubhouse. She shares with me the time on the board here and growing up in Durham Region.

(above) On the yatch club side we tried all sorts of options to find the perfect shot, this one was one of our favourites. The sun in the back hitting the boats does not overwhelm but enhances the warmth of the portrait. Warmth and approachability is essential for JoAnne’s story as an educator and now councillor on Whitby Council.

Serving the public takes a special kind of person and JoAnne is the first to admit she is not your typical politician. She listens and shares openly the experiences that have shaped her life. I think we talked for over one and a half hours during this session without pause. Her story needed to reflect her ability to quietly listen, her friendly sharing of her life story and her approach to her work on council.

(above) The last shot – also our cover shot – of the evening was taken just after the sun set. We call this time the blue hour. The sun still lights the sky and the earth’s shadow in seen in the sky casting a blue tone to the golden sunlight. JoAnne takes in the view on the Port Whitby side, another spot we used with permission from the Marina Supervisor.

This October we are going to be at Blackstock Christmas Tree Farm for our annual “The Christmas Tree Farm Experience” for family photos for this Christmas season coming up. We love this farm – owned by a young family who graciously is renting us the farm for a day October 24, 2020 in the afternoon (plus the back up date the Sunday Oct 25, 2020).

Our sessions will be socially distanced – all outside and shot with a zoom lens. Both Kirsten and Kennedy will be there to assist wearing masks. Orders will be placed online during a 5 day window for any additional products you might need for the holidays.

What is also different is how we are managing the props. This year it is all on you to bring blankets and that one single, family Christmas item. Our son is shown above with a star that always hangs on the back of our front door. Choose something timeless like a star, a snowflake, a lantern or maybe a copy of the Night Before Christmas. This keeps everyone safe with no reuse of props and an outdoor setting for fresh air. It also ties the session into your family traditions, making it a classic story of YOU.

Also very important is to note we are only taking a $50 deposit now and the remainder two weeks ahead of the date. This non refundable deposit can be moved to another session should we have stage changes due to the pandemic or worse a lockdown. This year we have tried to think of everything so you have a little less to worry about and more to look forward to.

Please see the link below to book your session and thanks for choosing us to Capture the Experience with this year.

Graduating in Durham Region During a Pandemic

Graduating in Durham Region During a Pandemic

It has been the story all over Whitby and the Durham Region – if you graduated this year things were decidely not the same. This client came to me after driving two hours to capture graduate photos they said fell flat. After seeing a similar session for a classmate they came to us for a redo.

By only doing one session a day and owning two hats we could add the hat the other supplier missed. We corrected details like messy hair and edited out a collar that slipped out because those are standard edits for us. Mom stepped in to assist so the contact with this young graduate was with someone in his family bubble. We stayed 6 feet apart using a longer lens and wearing a mask (yes even outside).

Grade eight graduation is normally full of very sweet moments – hot gyms filled with laughter and too many chairs, academic awards and thoughful speeches and of course the big dinner after its all done. But COVID-19 took that away from the kids and with numbers still very high there was no chance to even try hosting this during lockdown.

Our graduation sessions were designed to be fun, modern and make these graduates the centre of attention for the evening. This young man rocked his session.

I was told by the clients they were so delighted by the session they had a hard time deciding on which images to choose. It is always so lovely to deliver, especially after a client has had a less than satisfactory experience with photography before hiring you.

Our sessions come with a gallery to choose your favourite poses and order print sheets for them (one package even has two sheets included).

To book a session with us please fill out our Connect Form and we will send you information and follow up with a phone call to review.
