This is the fifth post in a series of blog posts highlight the past few years of creating strong, impactful images for clientele through my Corporate business and the editorial work I create for East of the City magazine. In this series I will introduce you to some amazing human beings who run their own business(es) and shape the business landscape in the Durham Region.
When I first walked into the warm ambiance of The Country Cheese Co. I was impacted by the way Tammy and her team interact with customers. There is an unmistakable warmth in her demeanour and the customer response is relaxed, people laughing and enjoying one of my favourite things in the world – cheese.
The store environment reminds me of a tasting room for cheese or wines – the light is darker and warm, the smells surround you and entice you.

Andrea Nicholson’s establishment Butchies is bringing a southern flare to downtown Whitby and the West Lynde neighbourhood. Named after her father, Andrea says,” I am the way I am because my dad was such a dreamer. And I named my dream after him.”
The menu is full of amazing choices – Country Fried Steak, Pulled Chicken and daily smoke options such as1/2 Roasted Lemon Garlic Chicken (Dinner Only) or St. Louis Side Ribs (1/2 or Full). Paired with sides such as mac’n’ cheese, hush puppies, devilled eggs and more. Finish your meal with home baked pie or a Kwartha Dairy Ice Cream cone.

Surrounded by iconic colour and creativity, the duo of Marc and Dee Walsh, are the owners of 4 Cats Arts Studio in Whitby where people of all ages can get their art on. After photographing Marc and Dee in 2015 for EAST of the City magazine we have become friends and they have become clients, as has our family of their business.
They both exude great energy and their art education, passion for this community and every day families is evident in their business and their inclusion in many off site charitable functions. At 4 Cats Art Studio you can study the masters of art, spin some clay on a wheel or learn the techniques of splatter or pour painting (to name but a few of the activities). Kids, adults and entire families come for the extremely popular paint splatter parties.
In an education system that continues to undervalue the importance of arts education it is breath of fresh air to see the work this studio does to bring art to the community in tandem, rather than in competition with other local art schools and institutions. After all the more art there is the better our world is for it.

A Professional Experience it is all about creating a simple, effective image of the client.
Before you hire ANY photographer “ask them about their experience” to ensure you hire someone who has proven experience and skills to execute a professional product. Creating head shot portraits is a very specific skill set requiring intimate knowledge of light, posing, proper focus and knowledge what does focal length do to a person’s face. Have them show you the work they have done and how they will achieve it.
The following are some the tips that will help you achieve a great image for your business portrait.
Tip #1. Keep it simple. When picking an outfit avoid patterns that can distract from the face. A professional portrait should focus on the subject – not on clothing or accessories they are wearing.
Tip #2. Hair and Makeup. Do not change your style too close to your session. Invest in professional services for a blow out and makeup as needed. When you feel your best you look your best.
Tip #3. Vary the Look. Our experiences allow clients to create a series of three looks. So bring a few looks from relaxed to corporate to get more out of your experience session with us.
Tip #4. Simple makeup. Keep makeup simple and natural. Avoid shimmer, sparkles and shine, as well as frost or bright colours. Any makeup should add to your natural beauty.
Tip #5. Accessories. Keep your accessories simple and classic. An accessory should be a compliment to your outfit not the star of the image. Remove watches and fitness trackers.
Tip #6. A good night’s sleep. We all look our best if we have had a good rest the night before. Schedule your session when this is possible for the best results.
Regrettably over 50% of the work we do in this area is a redoing of a bad experience with another photographer. Get the image you wanted the first time and book your experience with us.
Join us for a family photography “experience” in Whitby, Ontario.
Nestled in the south of Whitby’s modern urban landscape are lots of lovely conservation areas. This family friendly area is rich with groves of birch and pine trees, a water walkway and load of places to explore with wildlife. We love creating modern family photography in natural settings during the golden hour. During the evening we spent some time with a lovely family in this location as it is a versatile spot with many different areas for blend of natural settings for your family experience.
Golden hour was ideal one evening in early October to capture the experience for this local family photos for Mom, Dad and the two kids. We walked the walkway and ran the walkway. We tried to feed the birds but they were not hanging out that night. Instead we had fun running the trails and exploring the woods.
Enjoy a glimpse into their evening in this family video of their experience:
